How old are CYO players?
Players are usually aged 13 to 19
Do I need to have passed a particular grade exam?
No, but members are usually playing at about grade 5 to 8+
Do I have to audition?
When you make an application to join CYO we might ask to hear you play. This usually involves a short online audition which we make as friendly & relaxed as possible. More often than not, we just invite you to come along and join us for the day, to make sure you are happy with the way the orchestra works and to check that the orchestra’s repertoire is suitable for you
How much does it cost to become a member of CYO?
Playing in CYO costs £250 a year, which equates to less than £4/hour. Fees will usually be invoiced in two instalments. (The true cost is much higher, but a generous grant from ASONE Hub allows us to keep fees down. While nearly all other costs have risen, CYO fees have remained the same for over a decade!)
What if the fees are more than I can pay?
We appreciate that paying the fees can be a challenge for some people. Please do apply anyway, you can let us know that you’ll need help with the fees on the application form. We’ll signpost you to organisations that can assist you with the cost – we don’t want to turn anyone away on this basis
I don’t have any orchestral experience – is that a problem?
Not at all – you will gain valuable experience by being in CYO! However, most members already have some previous experience in school or area ensembles and we encourage everyone to continue playing in their other weekly groups even when they are members of CYO
I’d like to play in an orchestra but I don’t feel confident to sight-read
Sight-reading isn’t everyone’s favourite, so CYO players have plenty of time to prepare the music and the staff team help everyone feel comfortable to play their best. If you are challenged by reading or any other aspect of playing, just tell us. Staff are here to support & help you
I learned trombone/tuba in a brass band and read in treble clef – is that OK?
Even though orchestral music is written in different clefs, we’ll help make it easier for you as you learn valuable new skills
